When I wake up a warm soup is good
The thing I can't do without at breakfast is......what. I guess I can't do without is some warm soup like green tea or miso soup. In the morning my throat is dry, and so it's got to be like a soup or hot beverage.

If there's green tea of coffee, ◎
There are times I eat and times I don't, but I drink coffee or green tea. If I eat a meal, I guess I'm happy if there's natto, miso soup, grilled fish, and laver. If there's bread, then I like eggs sunny-side up. It's good if the yolk is only soft boiled.

I don't eat breakfast
I don't really eat breakfast, and not only breakfast, but I don't have a food I'm obsessed with. The one thing I do have is, I don't like boxed lunches without a main dish, like the maku no uchi kind. I like when it's easy to understand, like "This is the side dish!"

I like to eat Japanese food in the morning if I can. Rice and miso soup and natto, like that. But if you're saying something to go with rice, it's not good without green tea. I can't eat the rice (smile).

It's the best if there's roe with my miso soup!
I'm basically in the rice faction, so I can't do without miso soup. It's the best if there's cooked rice and roe. But, recently I've been lacking structure, so there have been many days I haven't eaten breakfast.

Because miso soup is the breakfast of Japanese people
Of course breakfast is miso soup. It's fine even it's just the instant kind you add hot water to. When there's miso soup, it feels like breakfast. The ingredients can be whatever, but if there's tofu it's even better.

If there's a drink I'm fine
I don't really eat breakfast itself, but if I put something in my mouth when I wake up, ice cream or jelly, something to drink. It's hot in the summer, so at times like this it's dry, and stuff like that is just right.

Special thanks to
Breakfast in Japan
Instead of doing individual notes, I decided to give this informational note on how breakfast in general works in Japan!
Breakfast is not a "special" meal like it is in the Western world. You eat for breakfast the same dishes you would eat at any other time of day (like the oft mentioned miso soup, rice, grilled fish, etc.), although there is a certain set form to Japanese breakfasts that most follow.
That said, there is also the "bread group," by which they mean people who eat Western style breakfast foods. This is misleading, however, because aside from the appearance of eggs and bacon/sausage, it's not *breakfast*, not really. What I ate in Japan every morning: egg, two sausages, plain yogurt with cranberry yogurt, salad/green beans, piece of Texas Toast, grapefruit juice. (Not kidding about the toast; a loaf of bread is six slices (no ends).)
So, the general thesis of the Japanese breakfast, be you on the side of rice or bread, is to create a meal with many small dishes adding up to one breakfast (kind of like what cereal commercials try to get you to eat, only with more vegetables).
●Natto - Fermented soybeans. I would advise avoiding any and all contact with this food, although some people swear by how healthy it is. Like Vegemite in that you will probably think it is the grossest thing ever if you did not grow up eating it. (Also said to be despised in Kansai.)
●Omlette - this is just the egg, nothing inside of it. It's usually square (special square pans!) and they omlette is rolled so you end up with this thick stick of egg.
●Roe - The roe mentioned here is tarako, which is a certain kind of roe.
●Tenmusu - A salty rice ball that uses shrimp tenpura as an ingredient
●Pickled Daikon - Takuan, picked daikon, is bright yellow and has a pretty strong taste. Japanese cuisine is kind of known for its pickled vegetables (they pickle everything). This particular thing, a mainstream tsukemono, is named for a famous monk who is said to have loved it. (He also features prominently in Musashi and is way awesome. Can I just say, read the book!
●Bonito flakes - THEY MOVE. It is *way* creepy, dudes, so if you ever want to freak someone out, just put some bonito flakes on top.
●Slow-boiled eggs - These are apparently eggs with a hard yolk but runny whites. They're traditionally cooked in a hot spring.
