Well, at least it's halfway over.
Okay, friends list. I've listened to you prattle on and on about this stuff, and I've tried to just not care, but I've reached my limit. Fine! You win! But this will not go unremembered.

Gekiranger 10-25
Well, I thought I'd seen more Geki than this. I thought I had more Geki on my hard drive. But, apparently not.

Anyway! Let's see, this was: Ran is assaulted by a perverted elephant for lolz, Retsu learns to dance, Jan abuses koinobori, Master Shafu's ex-girlfriend is pissed, Jan is taught by a member of the cast of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Ran is forced to play mom, Rio is really Strong And Evil (did you know that?), I can has power-up?, Jan can show you the world (shining, shimmering splendid), and look it's a mysterious-- Retsu's brother~!?!?.

How many times are people going to not realize the creepy hermit is actually the Old Master they seek? Sheesh.

I find it kind of awesome that part of this is Shafu's ex's rage. Like, I didn't think Geki was really going to have that much of a, you know, real plot. Maybe kind of like Magi? But it makes more sense now.

Also, did I forget about Shafu's no fighting vow, or were we just told of it for the first time here?

Incidentally, VERY CREATIVE NAMES, THERE. (For those of you non Japanese speakers, they keep taking the animal names the monsters are based on and moving the the first character to be the last, in some kind of demented pig latin.

I was also about to award them 25 million points, because it looked like Michelle Peng (I think her name is) was going to line up with Retsu, but no.

Gou. You. I just. I thought they were exaggerating in Geki v. Bouken, but that really *is* all you say, isn't it?

Ran being Captain, though, that's pretty ace.

I still kind of have this problem figuring out how, if jealousy and hatred and rage are what makes you strong, how Mele is working this "soldier of love" aspect.

Watching this is a lot like watching Netsuretsu Teki Chuuka Hanten; I would be totally down with anyone who wanted to write a fic about the Gekiranger getting caught up into accidentally being chefs on a fail boat. Unless that happens later in Gekiranger...? I wouldn't put it past Toei, really.

My plan is, after I finish Geki (probably on Saturday?), take on Go-On, then Kiva, then Gao, then *sigh* 555. ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT ME TO SEE, FRIENDS LIST? Don't say Bioman.

Translation: AnS Staff Blog 9/1/08 and 9/8/08
(They delayed last week's entry for several days, so I decided to just wait to do it with this week's.)

2008.9.1

My my, it's over! 24 Hour TV. Because there was some editing to be done behind the scenes after the end of the broadcasting, it was longer, but it's good we somehow made it in time for broadcasting!

Behind the scenes, we did this kind of stuff~ Stupid, right? (smile) Doing Laughter Aerobics all around, and drawing the curious attention from the entertainers around (they weren't annoyed), Arashi did it for us even though they didn't want to. And Arashi being vigilant for the sudden appearance of Happy-san or Kamihara-san while in transit was interesting. For staying with us late into the night, Happy-san, Kamihara-san, Gandhi Ramen's owner, thank you very much! Thanks to you Arashi was able to do it energetically~

This time in the experiment group, the following group, and the Arashi's progress group, the staff operated all together. As the Shukudai-kun staff, we were happy to have received time to do a plan in our style. It was a short time, but we think, "We were able to show our usual feeling?" If it wasn't for this chance, we probably wouldn't be able to do something like our stupid experiments with Nakama-san and Tokumitsu-san.

4 years ago, without participating in the plan of 24 Hour TV itself, we put our energy into winning over Arashi over doing nothing but following Arashi and "If You Leave It Alone for 24 Hours," and our reckless full throttle was fun, but frankly we couldn't wipe the feeling of "away". This time, however, we had a plan to capitalize on each of the member's individual personalties, and we had increased our knowledge of the staff in place, and we could see the members and staff exchanging words here and there, and it became so that just how hard these five had worked over the last 4 years was in front of our eyes. It was such that even if this program's staff hadn't butted in, there were lots of people who recognized each member's personality. You on the other side of the television must have felt it as well, but on this 24 Hour TV, Arashi's growth was truly felt. If they are personalities again, maybe an even more mature Arashi will appear. Let's all look forward to that day. To you who watched all along, thank you.

2008.9.8

It was the first appearance of an artist in a while! Suga-san, thank you for getting excited about the fireworks competition and Aibaland. The opinion "It didn't think this was a (program) where I'd use this much physical strength" from Suga-san!! But it was fun, right?!

Nevertheless, this time's Aibaland was... dangerous. Although the wise saying from Suga-san was, "No matter if you do it properly or not, you'll take damage," surely! wasn't it. From the time of the explanation of the rules a dangerous mood hung in the air, but just as predicted, after almost all the members finished, they were sunk one by one as if so embarrassed they couldn't exist without hiding their face! The staff watched while laughing really hard. But, in fact the very first person to take damage was Director Hino. At the meeting, he was persistently asked "show us an example!" by the members, and reluctantly displayed and was sunk! Since he was saying he was going to make them do it on air, well, you reap what you sow, eh (smile).

Now then, somehow this was Shukudai-kun's 100th episode. It was a feeling of, "When did that happen?!", but we've already done that many episodes. Aim for it, a long running show! All of our viewers, please from now on your patronage, and please treat us kindly!

I really have very little to say about AnS or DnA that isn't incredibly incriminating. ALAS.

Yes. That is really what Gou says all the time. :( Half of the time I can't help but want to throw a shoe at my computer because of his annoying catchphrase.

Maybe you should take on the complete series first, maybe to get a better picture of the entire series before watching the more incomplete ones.

Gah. I knew from Geki v. Bouken I wasn't really going to like him (or Ken), but still.

I want to catch up on Go-On and Kiva so I can follow along week by week with everyone. It's more fun that way, I think (^^)

You might like Gou & Ken more when you see their focus episodes. I completely agree both can definitely be irritating in their own special ways, mind you!

I love the hell outta Ken, partly 'cos I've had him in [info]sentai_gakuen for months and months and months now, but also because he's not your typical last ranger.

He's not emo, he's got a fairly stable home life, he's a bit mental (his intro with Jan has to be seen to be believed, LOL), he's loyal and loving and tough, but a bit flighty and crazy and unreliable, and I dig the hell outta that. He's also got some nice moments with Gou when they disagree about some really heavy things and yell at each other.

If I had to guess it's because Mele is jealous of the rangers because Rio devotes all his time to defeating them instead of giving her that sweet, sweet black lion lovin' she so desperately desires. Keep in mind I totally pulled this explanation out of my ass. :(

Poor Gou, I think he does get more lines later... I hope.

I think Mele works her Soldier of Love Mojo by A)Getting jealous of anyone else who gets near Rio-sama and B) Hating everyone who gets in Rio-sama's way.

And Ran might be my fave female sentai character ever (It's a tie between her and Jasmine). She's responsible and direct and kickass and without her, Jan and Retsu would failfailfail every mission. Captain!

Hope you enjoy the rest!

*shrugs* I'm used to sentai making characters from caricatures, so.

You know, that's true.

I do like Ran, even if I'm not quite sure yet what her personality is supposed to be. But then, that happens to Yellows a lot.

I love you for not falling in the trap that is Geki. I wish I could understand why fandom is so desperately infatuated with it, because the only redeeming values I can find in it are well-designed suits and an over-arcing plot (despite the stupidity within). The acting, voice actors, character development suuuuck hardcore. I could rant all day. Did I ever mention how I dreamed that I was ranting to someone about how awful Geki was? Yeah, my hatred runs deep.

Watch Mebius!! Have you seen Blade? I don't know how much of a Kamen Rider fan you are so I dunno, you may not be interested judging by your sigh for Faiz.
Look forward to your reactions to Go-on and Kiva :|

Well, you know me (^^)v It reminds me of Magiranger a lot, which, having been through that, I know how to handle it, I guess? *shrugs* Gou's actor in particular has been bothering me, though D: Still, cannot fault Jan's actor for making AWESOME FACES.

I knew you were going to say that. I haven't seen Blade, no. There were several of those KRs TN started and then stopped that I was interested in, but I think they had finished Blade at the time, which, you know, big investment of hard drive space and I haven't even seen Faiz yet. I sighed at Faiz because of how ridiculous it is that I've been putting off seeing it for three years, though, not because I'm not interested. And Go-On and Kiva? Well, we all know how I feel about RIDICULOUS car sentai, so. :P

Honestly, considering how much liking certain sentai has to do with personal preference (IMO), I wouldn't bother. 80s sentai doesn't seem generally popular anyways. Sigh. Of course, this is coming from the one person in fandom who hates Boukenger, so yeah. :(

[EDIT] Although I strongly disliked Gao at first, but then after watching it with non sucky subs (i.e. Blue declaring he's not a brat instead of a goblin), I wound up liking it a lot. :o

Well, but I do like GoggleV? *shrugs* I lost interest in Bio because I had *no idea* why they were doing what they were doing, so maybe with my leveled up Japanese...?

(Sad to say, my problem with Gao is its opening theme song. I feel like I should give it more of a chance, but... I *live* for sentai OP/EDs, how is it I met one I hate this much?)

I was also about to award them 25 million points, because it looked like Michelle Peng (I think her name is) was going to line up with Retsu, but no.

I KNOW. I will be forever crushed that Retsu wasn't the penguin. I mean, I sort of get why they did it, they each had things they needed to work on and Retsu's "technique" was already his strong point, but--! After the hotness that was Retsu learning to fan dance with Bat Lee, I wanted him working with Michelle! (And, also, I was disappointed just because, oh, well, of course they had to put the girl with the girl. And after they were so great and gave her the "hammer" to use in the first place!)

I like Gou a lot, but I'm also weak to older brothers who are maybe kind of inappropriate to their precious little baby brothers. But I'm 40 episodes into Gekiranger and I still have yet to warm up to Ken, eh. (I'm watching Faiz at the moment, too, and I want to smack, like, EVERYONE in this series and yet I find it oddly compelling!)

At the meeting, he was persistently asked "show us an example!" by the members, and reluctantly displayed and was sunk! Since he was saying he was going to make them do it on air, well, you reap what you sow, eh (smile).

Just when I think I couldn't love Hino-chan more, somehow I do. I know you mentioned that they made him do it first, but this is even better than I was expecting and just. The image of Arashi pestering him THROUGH THE WHOLE MEETING while he tried to resist is great. Thank you so much for translating these, I love the Shukudai-kun staff, so it's awesome being able to get to know them a little better!

I'm kind of torn there, because I like that they made her the technique master (girls aren't smrt enough for waza, trufax), but on the other hand how awesome would that have been?

Gou... he bothers me because of how unbrotherly he is. Like, Retsu has sort of really changed his life to focus on him because of his admiration, and Gou returns that with... not hitting him and then trying to leave the team fifty million times? Well, and, I'm spoiled because this keeps reminding me of Magiranger, and Makito is *so awesome* and Tsubasa tries *so hard* that Gou is sort of throwing off my groove. (Relevant information: The Magi team were siblings.)

What I love best about this blog is that *everyone* is up for mocking. Guests, Arashi, whoever is writing this's BOSS, I just. YES. Well, and, I also kind of love how they used "sinking of a ship" everytime to describe the embarassment :D

It turned out all right eventually and I kind of loved Retsu as the gazelle (even if it made no sense to me that the gorilla was apparently the smart one--ETA: versus being the strong one, I mean!--but I forgave them because Gorie-sensei is twenty kinds of awesome) but I still feel like Gekiranger sort of lost the magic in the second half of the series.

Gou... I do wish he'd been more brotherly (even if he was certainly inappropriate enough at certain points--the Retsu episode that's... ep 39, I think? with the Mirror Retsu? is a lot more brotherly) but I can forgive them because that's probably what Gou was like when Retsu was a kidlet, too. Sometimes there, more often wandering off to do whatever.

Of course, my feelings on Geki pretty much revolve around Retsu, so I think you may have noticed this bias already. XD

I also loved Retsu vs. PyonPyon, so I kind of forgave them too. (Gorie-sensei reminds me of Ishmael -- that was actually a really good book; I can't believe I read it in high school.) Sentai series have a problem with petering out towards the end a lot of the time. *shrugs* I think it's because they ration their plot more evenly than, say, a KR, so you're not really excited for the end of the series because you've been recieving the plot in steady bits for the whole time. I dunno, it's not like it *never* works out, but.

Judging from this preview, I'd say the mirror Retsu episode is 38? Hahaha, I suppose I shall see very soon how brotherly Gou is there. :P

Retsu is kind of my blatant favorite too. ALAS, ALWAYS TAKEN IN BY THE BLUES. (Unless there is a Green...)

*delurks* Hello there, you don't know me, I wandered over from [info]beckerbell's posts about a month or so back and have been stalking following you ever since. I wanted to let you know that I'm really enjoying your article and blog translations and fannish commentaries (and, er, the language study trials and tribulations, since I majored in sociolinguistics and studied Chinese and Japanese in school :DV).

I haven't heard much about the AnS staff but they sound awesome.
